Polyureas have widespread applications due to their unique material properties. Because of the toxicity of isocyanates, sustainable isocyanate-free routes to prepare polyureas are a field of active research. Current routes to isocyanate-free polyureas focus on constructing the urea moiety in the final polymerizing step. In this study we present a new isocyanate-free method to produce polyureas by Ru-catalyzed carbene insertion into the N-H bonds of urea itself in combination with a series of bis-diazo compounds as carbene precursors. The mechanism was investigated by kinetics and DFT studies, revealing the rate-determining step to be nucleophilic attack on a Ru-carbene moiety by urea. This study paves the way to use transition-metal-catalyzed reactions in alternative routes to polyureas.

The sun is the most sustainable source of photons on the earth but is rarely used in photochemical transformations due its relatively low and variable intensity, broad wavelength range, and lack of focus. Luminescent solar concentrator-based photomicroreactors (LSC-PMs) can be an answer to all these issues, but widespread adoption is plagued by challenges associated with their complicated manufacturing. Herein, we developed a new strategy to accelerate and ease the production of LSC-PMs by depositing a thin luminescent film on commercially and widely available silicon-based microreactors. The protocol is fast and operationally simple, and the luminescent coating can be easily removed and replaced. This enables rapid tuning of the luminescent coating to fit the requirements of the photocatalytic system and to increase the photon flux inside the microreactor channels.

SARS-CoV-2 cellular infection is mediated by the heavily glycosylated spike protein. Recombinant versions of the spike protein and the receptor-binding domain (RBD) are necessary for seropositivity assays and can potentially serve as vaccines against viral infection. RBD plays key roles in the spike protein's structure and function, and thus, comprehensive characterization of recombinant RBD is critically important for biopharmaceutical applications. Liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry has been widely used to characterize post-translational modifications in proteins, including glycosylation. Most studies of RBDs were performed at the proteolytic peptide (bottom-up proteomics) or released glycan level because of the technical challenges in resolving highly heterogeneous glycans at the intact protein level. Herein, we evaluated several online separation techniques: (1) C2 reverse-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC), (2) capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE), and (3) acrylamide-based monolithic hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) to separate intact recombinant RBDs with varying combinations of glycosylations (glycoforms) for top-down mass spectrometry (MS). Within the conditions we explored, the HILIC method was superior to RPLC and CZE at separating RBD glycoforms, which differ significantly in neutral glycan groups. In addition, our top-down analysis readily captured unexpected modifications (e.g., cysteinylation and N-terminal sequence variation) and low abundance, heavily glycosylated proteoforms that may be missed by using glycopeptide data alone. The HILIC top-down MS platform holds great potential in resolving heterogeneous glycoproteins for facile comparison of biosimilars in quality control applications.

Molecular photoelectrochemical devices are hampered by electron–hole recombination after photoinduced electron transfer, causing losses in power conversion efficiency. Inspired by natural photosynthesis, we demonstrate the use of supramolecular machinery as a strategy to inhibit recombination through an organization of molecular components that enables unbinding of the final electron acceptor upon reduction. We show that preorganization of a macrocyclic electron acceptor to a dye yields a pseudorotaxane that undergoes a fast (completed within ~50 ps) ‘ring-launching’ event upon electron transfer from the dye to the macrocycle, releasing the anionic macrocycle and thus reducing charge recombination. Implementing this system into p-type dye-sensitized solar cells yielded a 16-fold and 5-fold increase in power conversion efficiency compared to devices based on the two control dyes that are unable to facilitate pseudorotaxane formation. The active repulsion of the anionic macrocycle with concomitant reformation of a neutral pseudorotaxane complex circumvents recombination at both the semiconductor–electrolyte and semiconductor–dye interfaces, enabling a threefold enhancement in hole lifetime. The encounter complex, i.e. the pre-organized assembly consisting of a Lewis acid and a Lewis base, is a fundamental concept in frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) chemistry. However, this donor-acceptor complex is challenging to study due to its transient nature. Here, we present a combined theoretical and experimental investigation on the potential isolation of an encounter complex enabled by enhancement of London dispersion forces between a sterically encumbered Lewis acid and base pair. Guided by computational analyses, the FLP originating from the bulky triarylamine N(3,5-tBu2C6H3)3 and the novel triarylborane B(3,5-tBu2C6H3)3 was investigated, leading to the isolation of a 1:1 co-crystal of both FLP components.

Inspired by ideas from NMR, we have developed Infrared Diffusion-Ordered Spectroscopy (IR-DOSY), which simultaneously characterizes molecular structure and size. We rely on the fact that the diffusion coefficient of a molecule is determined by its size through the Stokes-Einstein relation, and achieve sensitivity to the diffusion coefficient by creating a concentration gradient and tracking its equilibration in an IR-frequency resolved manner. Analogous to NMR-DOSY, a two-dimensional IR-DOSY spectrum has IR frequency along one axis and diffusion coefficient (or equivalently, size) along the other, so the chemical structure and the size of a compound are characterized simultaneously. In an IR-DOSY spectrum of a mixture, molecules with different sizes are nicely separated into distinct sets of IR peaks. Extending this idea to higher dimensions, we also perform 3D-IR-DOSY, in which we combine the conformation sensitivity of femtosecond multi-dimensional IR spectroscopy with size sensitivity.

Herein, we show that the photoactive complexes [(Cp)Fe(arene)]+(Cp = cyclopentadienyl; arene = C6H6, C6H5Me) act as latent catalysts that allow for photochemical control over the onset of alkyd paint curing, without the need for antiskinning agents such as the volatile 2-butanone oxime normally used to prevent curing during paint storage. The highly soluble neutral complexes [(Cp)Fe(Ch)] and [(Cp)Fe(Ch′)] (Ch = cyclohexadienyl, Ch′ = methylcyclohexadienyl) readily convert to the photoactive complexes [(Cp)Fe(arene)]+upon oxidation in alkyd, allowing the latter to be dosed in a wide range of concentrations. Infrared and Raman studies show similar spectral changes of the alkyd paint matrix as have been observed in alkyd curing mediated by well-known, industrially applied cobalt- and manganese-based catalyst Co(neodecanoate)2and [(Me3TACN)2Mn2(μ-OOCR)3](OOCR). The [(Cp)Fe(Ch)]/[(Cp)Fe(arene)]+system performs equally well as these cobalt- and manganese-based catalysts in terms of drying time and outperform the manganese catalyst by showing a hardness development (increase) similar to that of the cobalt-based catalyst. Based on electron paramagnetic resonance and light-activity studies, we propose that photolysis of [(Cp)Fe(arene)]+generates short-lived active FeIIspecies, explaining the desired latency. The [(Cp)Fe(Ch)]/[(Cp)Fe(arene)]+alkyd curing systems presented herein are unique examples of intrinsically latent paint curing catalysts that (1) are based on an abundant and harmless transition metal (Fe), (2) do not require any antiskinning agents, and (3) show favorable performance in terms of drying times and hardness development.

Intermetallic compounds (IMCs) are interesting materials in the field of heterogeneous catalysis due to their ordered structure and tunable electronic properties. These IMCs can act as precursor to synthesize metal/metal oxide composite catalysts that are more active than just the starting IMCs. In this work, Sm2Co7 and SmCo5 IMCs were used as precursors to prepare highly active and stable Co_SmO, Co_Sm2O3 and Co3O4_Sm2O3 catalysts via controlled modification. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) demonstrated that Co and Sm2O3 Nano crystallites were formed after the modification of the IMC. IMCs derived Co_SmO and Co_Sm2O3 were stable and active in NH3 synthesis with very low activation energy of 55 and 77 kJ mol−1 respectively. The structural, morphological and surface characterization revealed that a strong metal support interaction existed between Co and Sm2O3 (electronic effect) along with the presence of surface steps and edges of Co nano crystallites (structural effect) that activate the N2 at low temperature (360 °C). Similarly, Co3O4_Sm2O3 derived from the IMC were found to exhibit high CO2 and butane conversion in butane dry reforming at low temperature (550 °C) with excellent stability. The study revealed that the presence of Co3O4 and Sm2O3 active sites in close proximity (geometrical effect) promoted the simultaneous adsorption or activation of butane and CO2. The Co_Sm2O3 and Co3O4_Sm2O3 derived from IMCs exhibited superior catalytic performance in both NH3 synthesis and butane dry reforming compared to similar compositional catalyst synthesized by hydrothermal route. These studies pave the way to potential uses of IMCs as precursors to derive composite metal/metal oxide catalysts that are highly stable and active despite their low surface areas.

22 pags., 8 figs., 1 tab., Massive stars disrupt their natal molecular cloud material through radiative and mechanical feedback processes. These processes have profound effects on the evolution of interstellar matter in our Galaxy and throughout the universe, from the era of vigorous star formation at redshifts of 1-3 to the present day. The dominant feedback processes can be probed by observations of the Photo-Dissociation Regions (PDRs) where the far-ultraviolet photons of massive stars create warm regions of gas and dust in the neutral atomic and molecular gas. PDR emission provides a unique tool to study in detail the physical and chemical processes that are relevant for most of the mass in inter-and circumstellar media including diffuse clouds, proto-planetary disks, and molecular cloud surfaces, globules, planetary nebulae, and star-forming regions. PDR emission dominates the infrared (IR) spectra of star-forming galaxies. Most of the Galactic and extragalactic observations obtained with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will therefore arise in PDR emission. In this paper we present an Early Release Science program using the MIRI, NIRSpec, and NIRCam instruments dedicated to the observations of an emblematic and nearby PDR: the Orion Bar. These early JWST observations will provide template data sets designed to identify key PDR characteristics in JWST observations. These data will serve to benchmark PDR models and extend them into the JWST era. We also present the Science-Enabling products that we will provide to the community. Today, we are faced with immense global challenges in finding sustainable equilibria between socio-economic, political, and ecological concerns. The European Chemistry Thematic Network (ECTN), the European University Association (EUA) and the European Commission are committed to sustainable improvement of the quality of university chemistry education to cope with these challenges. In this position paper, we advocate the creation of the Eurolecturer Academy (ELA), an innovative, European state of the art higher education learning platform serving academics in their continuous professional development of teaching competences and thereby supporting academics to educate students to be successful in the changing world. Within this newly established educational entity, there will be two levels of membership, Associated membership and Full membership. The ELA will not only facilitate continuous professional development of university teaching staff but will at the same time create a structure to support recognition of teaching competences of lecturers within the European dimension in teaching and learning. The certification will profit from the new 5th European Qualification Framework for micro-credentials, providing a much needed “academic currency” for the purpose of recognition of academic credentials. The ELA micro-credentials will be issued by certifying the learning outcomes of short-term learning experiences in the field of teaching and learning in higher education. The ELA will provide a micro-credentials catalogue that will address the needs for professional development of lecturers and ensure the quality of the micro-credentials through close cooperation with the internationally operating accreditation organization ASIIN (https://www.asiin.de/en/) using quality standards and valid assessment according to international best practice. Shifting away from fossil- to biobased feedstocks is an important step towards a more sustainable materials sector. Isosorbide is a rigid, glucose-derived secondary diol, which has been shown to impart favourable material properties, but its low reactivity has hampered its use in polyester synthesis. Here we report a simple, yet innovative, synthesis strategy to overcome the inherently low reactivity of secondary diols in polyester synthesis. It enables the synthesis of fully biobased polyesters from secondary diols, such as poly(isosorbide succinate), with very high molecular weights (Mn up to 42.8 kg/mol). The addition of an aryl alcohol to diol and diacid monomers was found to lead to the in-situ formation of reactive aryl esters during esterification, which facilitated chain growth during polycondensation to obtain high molecular weight polyesters. This synthesis method is broadly applicable for aliphatic polyesters based on isosorbide and isomannide and could be an important step towards the more general commercial adaption of fully biobased, rigid polyesters.

Flexibility is essential for many proteins to function, but can be difficult to characterize. Experiments lack resolution in space and time, while the time scales involved are prohibitively long for straightforward molecular dynamics simulations. In this work, we present a multiple state transition path sampling simulation study of a protein that has been notoriously difficult to characterize in its active state. The GTPase enzyme KRas is a signal transduction protein in pathways for cell differentiation, growth, and division. When active, KRas tightly binds guanosine triphosphate (GTP) in a rigid state. The protein-GTP complex can also visit more flexible states, in which it is not active. KRas mutations can affect the conversion between these rigid and flexible states, thus prolonging the activation of signal transduction pathways, which may result in tumor formation. In this work, we apply path sampling simulations to investigate the dynamic behavior of KRas-4B (wild type, WT) and the oncogenic mutant Q61L (Q61L). Our results show that KRas visits several conformational states, which are the same for WT and Q61L. The multiple state transition path sampling (MSTPS) method samples transitions between the different states in a single calculation. Tracking which transitions occur shows large differences between WT and Q61L. The MSTPS results further reveal that for Q61L, a route to a more flexible state is inaccessible, thus shifting the equilibrium to more rigid states. The methodology presented here enables a detailed characterization of protein flexibility on time scales not accessible with brute-force molecular dynamics simulations.

Traditional liquid-chromatographic techniques, such as size-exclusion chromatography, (critical) interaction chromatography, and hydrodynamic chromatography, can all reveal certain aspects of polymers and the underlying distributions. The distribution of incorporated acid groups present in polyacrylates can be determined by non-aqueous ion-exchange chromatography, independent of other distributions present. The microstructural details on how this number of acid groups is incorporated in the polymer remains unknown. A low-molar mass polymer molecule with high acid content and a high-molar mass polymer with a low acid content may have the exact same number of acid groups. To take a next step towards understanding the polymer microstructure of water-borne resins, the distribution of incorporated acid groups over the molar-mass distribution has been investigated. For this purpose, an on-line coupling of non-aqueous ion-exchange chromatography (NAIEX) to size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) was established. Practical considerations regarding the system setup with respect to chromatography modes and column- and valve switching dimensionality are discussed. The orthogonality of NAIEX and SEC is demonstrated. Both liquid chromatography modes may be calibrated using polymer standards, yielding a calibrated separation plane. Cross-sectional data on either the molar mass distribution or the acid group distribution at a certain point of the separation plane is obtained. The value of the designed setup was demonstrated by the detailed characterization of the combined acid-group and molar-mass distribution in polymers with a low acid content, in the order of a few mass-%. Several stages of the emulsion polymerization process could be identified using the combined power of NAIEX and SEC.

Herein, we show how the merge of biocatalysis with flow chemistry aided by 3D-printing technologies can facilitate organic synthesis. This concept was exemplified for the reductive amination of benzaldehyde catalysed by co-immobilised amine dehydrogenase and formate dehydrogenase in a continuous flow micro-reactor. For this purpose, we investigated enzyme co-immobilisation by covalent binding, or ion-affinity binding, or entrapment. Entrapment in an agarose hydrogel turned out to be the most promising solution for this biocatalytic reaction. Therefore, we developed a scalable and customisable approach whereby an agarose hydrogel containing the co-entrapped dehydrogenases was cast in a 3D-printed mould. The reactor was applied to the reductive amination of benzaldehyde in continuous flow over 120 h and afforded 47 % analytical yield and a space-time yield of 7.4 g L day−1 using 0.03 mol% biocatalysts loading. This work also exemplifies how rapid prototyping of enzymatic reactions in flow can be achieved through 3D-printing technology.

Photocatalytic hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) processes have been the object of numerous studies showcasing the potential of the homogeneous photocatalyst tetrabutylammonium decatungstate (TBADT) for the functionalization of C(sp3)–H bonds. However, to translate these studies into large-scale industrial processes, careful considerations of catalyst loading, cost, and removal are required. This work presents organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) as an answer to reduce TBADT consumption, increase its turnover number and lower its concentration in the product solution, thus enabling large-scale photocatalytic HAT-based transformations. The operating parameters for a suitable membrane for TBADT recovery in acetonitrile were optimized. Continuous photocatalytic C(sp3)-H alkylation and amination reactions were carried out with in-line TBADT recovery via two OSN steps. Promisingly, the observed product yields for the reactions with in-line catalyst recycling are comparable to those of reactions performed with pristine TBADT, therefore highlighting that not only catalyst recovery (>99%, TON > 8400) is a possibility, but also that it does not happen at the expense of reaction performance.

UiO-66 is a benchmark metal-organic framework that holds great promise for the design of new functional materials. In this work, we perform two-dimensional infrared measurements on polycrystalline membranes of UiO-66 grown on c-sapphire substrates. We study the symmetric and antisymmetric stretch vibrations of the carboxylate groups of the terephthalate linker ions and find that these vibrations show a rapid energy exchange and a collective vibrational relaxation with a time constant of 1.3 ps. We also find that the symmetric vibration of the carboxylate group is strongly coupled to a vibration of the aromatic ring of the terephthalate ion. We observe that the antisymmetric carboxylate vibrations of different terephthalate linkers show rapid resonant (Förster) energy transfer with a time constant of ∼1 ps.

The efficient C-4 selective modification of pyridines is a major challenge for the synthetic community. Current strategies are plagued with at least one drawback regarding functional group-tolerant electronic activation of the heteroarene, mild generation of the required alkyl radicals, regioselectivity, safety and/or scalability. Herein, we describe a fast, safe and scalable flow process which allows preparation of said C-4 alkylated pyridines. The process involves a photochemical hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) event to generate the carbon-centered radicals needed to alkylate the C-2 blocked pyridine. In a two-step streamlined flow process, this light-mediated alkylation step is combined with a nearly instantaneous inline removal of the blocking group. Notably, cheap benzophenone plays a dual role in the pyridine alkylation mechanism by activating the hydrocarbon feedstock reagents via a HAT mechanism, and by acting as a benign, terminal oxidant. The key role of benzophenone in the operative reaction mechanism has also been revealed through a combination of experimental and computational studies.

Most garments in museum collections have belonged to people of high societal status. Clothing of the common people, however, has rarely been preserved. Because of this, the conservation of such rare items is of special importance. The current study focuses on such an object from the Rijksmuseum collection; a pair of eighteenth century breeches that were retrieved from an anonymous grave on Spitsbergen. As these breeches contain several unidentified materials, it is unclear how best to conduct the conservation of the object. The identification of trace material plays a key role within criminal law and therefore, it is hypothesized that a forensic approach could provide a suitable framework within this case of cultural heritage as well. After forensic examination, trace material was analyzed using a microscopy-based approach and was found to be mainly of biological origin. Energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) and Attenuated Total Reflection Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy indicated the presence of human skin remains. It was concluded that a modern forensic approach can successfully be applied to a historical object within cultural heritage and can assist decision-making regarding possible future conservation of the object. The systematic application of the forensic methodology was found to be appropriate with little to no modification to classify and identify trace materials, but further improvements could be made. The current work should be seen as a starting point that allows for more questions regarding museum objects to be answered in a forensic manner, including aspects such as authenticity, the chain of custody, the context, original use and object conservation.

A strategy for both cross-electrophile coupling and 1,2-dicarbofunctionalization of olefins has been developed. Carbon-centered radicals are generated from alkyl bromides by merging benzophenone hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) photocatalysis and silyl radical-induced halogen atom transfer (XAT) and are subsequently intercepted by a nickel catalyst to forge the targeted C(sp3)-C(sp2) and C(sp3)-C(sp3) bonds. The mild protocol is fast and scalable using flow technology, displays broad functional group tolerance, and is amenable to a wide variety of medicinally relevant moieties. Mechanistic investigations reveal that the ketone catalyst, upon photoexcitation, is responsible for the direct activation of the silicon-based XAT reagent (HAT-mediated XAT) that furnishes the targeted alkyl radical and is ultimately involved in the turnover of the nickel catalytic cycle.

Novel seven‐membered cyclic imine‐based 1,3‐P,N ligands were obtained by capturing a Beckmann nitrilium ion intermediate generated in situ from cyclohexanone with benzotriazole, and then displacing it by a secondary phosphane under triflic acid promotion. These “cycloiminophosphanes” possess flexible non‐isomerizable tetrahydroazepine rings with a high basicity; this sets them apart from previously reported iminophophanes. The donor strength of the ligands was investigated by using their P‐κ1‐ and P,N‐κ2‐tungsten(0) carbonyl complexes, by determining the IR frequency of the trans‐CO ligands. Complexes with [RhCp*Cl2]2 demonstrated the hemilability of the ligands, giving a dynamic equilibrium of κ1 and κ2 species; treatment with AgOTf gives full conversion to the κ2 complex. The potential for catalysis was shown in the RuII‐catalyzed, solvent‐free hydration of benzonitrile and the RuII‐ and IrI‐catalyzed transfer hydrogenation of cyclohexanone in isopropanol. Finally, to enable access to asymmetric catalysts, chiral cycloiminophosphanes were prepared from l‐menthone, as well as their P,N‐κ2‐RhIII and a P‐κ1‐RuII complexes., Complexes, chirality and catalysts: 1,3‐P,N hybrid ligands are broadly applied in cooperative catalysis, but show limited electronic variation. We report novel analogues with a high N‐basicity, based on 7‐membered cyclic imines. Their transition metal complexes demonstrated their donor strength (W), hemilabile coordination (Rh), and catalytic activity for nitrile hydration (Ru) and transfer hydrogenation (Ru, Ir). Chiral derivatives were also obtained, synthesized from l‐menthone.

Two-dimensional liquid chromatography (2DLC) offers great separation power for complex mixtures. The frequently encountered incompatibility of two orthogonal separation systems, however, makes its application complicated. Active-modulation strategies can reduce such incompatibility issues considerably. Stationary-phase-assisted modulation (SPAM) is the most-common of these techniques, but also the least robust due to the major disadvantage that analytes may elute prematurely. The range of liquid chromatography (LC) applications continues to expand towards ever more complex mixtures. Retention modelling is increasingly indispensable to comprehend and develop LC separations. In this research, a tool was designed to assess the feasibility of applying SPAM in 2DLC. Several parameters were investigated to accurately predict isocratic retention of analytes on trap columns under dilution-flow conditions. Model parameters were derived from scanning-gradient experiments performed on analytical columns. The trap-to-trap repeatability was found to be similar to the prediction error. Dead volumes for the trap columns could not be accurately determined through direct experimentation. Instead, they were extrapolated from dead-volume measurements on analytical columns. Several known retention models were evaluated. Better predictions were found using the quadratic model than with the log-linear (“linear-solvent-strength”) model. Steep scanning gradients were found to result in inaccurate predictions. The impact of the dilution flow on the retention of analytes proved less straightforward than anticipated. Under certain conditions dilution with a weaker eluent was found to be counter productive. A tool was developed to quantify the effect of the dilution flow and to predict whether SPAM could be applied in specific situations. For nine different analytes under 36 different sets of conditions and with three different modulation times, the SPAM tool yielded a correct assessment in more than 95% of all cases (less than 5% false positives plus false negatives).

Photodegradation greatly affects everyday life. It poses challenges when food deteriorates or when objects of cultural heritage fade, but it can also create opportunities applied in advanced oxidation processes in water purification. Studying photodegradation, however, can be difficult because of the time needed for degradation, the inaccessibility of pure compounds, and the need to handle samples manually. A novel light-exposure cell, based on liquid-core-waveguide (LCW) technology, was embedded in a multiple-heart-cut two-dimensional liquid chromatography system by coupling the LCW cell to the multiple-heart-cut valve. The sample was flushed from the heart-cut loops into the cell by an isocratic pump. Samples were then irradiated using different time intervals and subsequently transferred by the same isocratic pump to a second-dimension sample loop. The mixture containing the transformation products was then subjected to the second-dimension separation. In the current setup, about 30-40% of the selected fraction was transferred. Multiple degradation products could be monitored. Degradation was found to be faster when a smaller sample amount was introduced (0.3 μg as compared to 1.5 μg). The system was tested with three applications, that is, fuchsin, a 19th-century synthetic organic colorant, annatto, a lipophilic food dye, and vitamin B complex.

Reversing the conventional site-selectivity of C−H activation processes provides new retrosynthetic disconnections to otherwise unreactive bonds. Here, we report a new catalytic system based on palladium/norbornene and an S,O-ligand for the meta-C−H arylation of aryl ethers that significantly outperforms previously reported systems. We demonstrate the unique ability of this system to employ alkoxyarene substrates bearing electron donating and withdrawing substituents. Additionally, ortho-substituted aryl ethers are well tolerated, overcoming the “ortho constraint”, which is the necessity to have a meta-substituent on the alkoxyarene to achieve high reaction efficiency, by enlisting novel norbornene mediators. Remarkably, for the first time the monoarylation of alkoxyarenes is achieved efficiently enabling the subsequent introduction of a second, different aryl coupling partner to rapidly furnish unsymmetrical terphenyls. Further insight into the reaction mechanism was achieved by isolation and characterization of some Pd-complexes—before and after meta C−H activation—prior to evaluation of their respective catalytic activities.

MXenes are a new family of 2D carbides or nitrides that have attracted attention due to their layered structure, tunable surface groups and high electrical conductivity. Here, we report for the first time that Ti 2 CT x MXene catalyses the selective oxidative dehydrogenation of n -butane to butenes and 1,3-butadiene. This catalyst showed higher intrinsic activity compared to commercial TiC and TiO 2 samples in terms of C 4 olefin formation rate. We propose that the stabilisation of structural vacancies and the change in composition (from a carbide to a mixed phase oxide) in the MXene causes its higher catalytic activity. These vacancies can lead to a higher concentration of unpaired electrons in the MXene-derived material, enhancing its nucleophilic properties and favouring the production of olefins. The structure of five rare filigree spheres from a seventeenth century shipwreck was examined in order to unravel their condition, manufacturing process and function. This study focuses on the application of non-invasive imaging techniques: optical microscopy, X-radiography, X-ray micro-computed tomography and neutron computed tomography. A valuation of different aspects of the applied techniques was made, aiding stakeholders in decision-making on research and conservation. The combination of theory and scientific information was used to obtain an improved understanding of the manufacturing process and function of the filigree spheres.

Gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) allow electrochemical reactions to occur at higher rates by enhancing the mass transport of gaseous reactants to the catalyst. These electrodes are made of two layers: the catalyst layer and the gas diffusion layer (GDL). The catalyst layer is frequently studied for gas diffusion electrodes, and the GDL is rarely a focus. Consequently, no studies investigate interaction effects that may be present between these two layers. To study such interactions, it must be possible to obtain GDLs with various characteristics. This study uses a design of experiments to understand how multiple factors in the production method for GDLs can be adjusted to tune the characteristics of the GDL. These GDLs are particularly intended for the electrochemical reduction of CO2. The conductance through the GDL, surface conductivity, thickness, elasticity, hydrophobicity, and porosity are measured for the 26 synthesized electrodes, and the top influential production factors are identified for each characteristic.

Tailoring the local chemistry environment to optimize the geometric and electronic properties of single atom catalysts has received much attention recently. Yet, most efforts have been devoted to establishing the preferable binding between the solid support and the single metal atom. In this work, a hybrid coordination environment was created for Fe-based single atom catalysts, comprising inorganic anchoring site from the support and organic ligands from the precursor. Using N,S co-doped graphene oxide as the support, Fe phthalocyanine was selectively anchored by the N/S sites, creating the unique N/S−Fe−N4 active sites as evidenced by extended X-ray absorption fine structure and Mössbauer spectrometry. Compared with other analogues with different metal centers or support, N/S−Fe−N4 showed much improved activity in oxygen reduction reaction, delivering onset and half-wave potentials of 1.02 and 0.94 V. This was superior over the state-of-the-art 20 wt % Pt/C and the classic Fe−N4 carbon catalysts. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the interaction between phthalocyanine ligands and heteroatom dopant from the support pushed electrons of Fe site to para-position, facilitating O2 adsorption and activation. This work shows the exciting opportunities of creating a hybrid coordination environment in single atom catalysts and paves a new avenue of improving their catalytic performance.

Metal oxide semiconductors are widely used in photocatalysis for the sustainable synthesis of fine chemicals and fuels. However, the mechanisms and the actual catalytically active species involved in these photocatalytic processes are not yet fully understood. Herein, we reveal that the addition of certain amines can effectively accelerate the photocatalytic atom transfer radical addition (ATRA) reaction by stabilizing a soluble Bi-species formed through a reaction between Bi2O3 and diethyl bromomalonate using either N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) or dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as a solvent. Moreover, thermodynamic calculations revealed that N, N, N’, N’-tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA), and DMF yield the most stable complexes [(κ2-TMEDA)2BiBr3], ultimately accelerating the formation of the targeted ATRA product.

Supramolecular adducts between dimethyl‐2,2,3,3‐tetracyanocyclopropane (Me2TCCP) with 21 small (polar) molecules and 10 anions were computed with DFT (B3LYP‐D3/def2‐TZVP). Their optimized geometries were used to obtain interaction energies, and perform energy decomposition and ‘atoms‐in‐molecules’ analyses. A set of 38 other adducts were also evaluated for comparison purposes. Selected examples were further scrutinized by inspection of the molecular electrostatic potential maps, Noncovalent Interaction index plots, the Laplacian, the orbital interactions, and by estimating the Gibbs free energy of complexation in hexane solution. These calculations divulge the thermodynamic feasibility of Me2TCCP adducts and show that complexation is typically driven by dispersion with less polarized partners, but by orbital interactions when more polarized or anionic guests are deployed. Most Me2TCCP adducts are more stable than simple hydrogen bonding with water, but less stable than traditional Lewis adducts involving Me3B, or a strong halogen bond such as with Br2. Several bonding analyses showed that the locus of interaction is found near the electron poor sp3‐hydridized (NC)2C−C(CN)2 carbon atoms. An empty hybrid σ*/π* orbital on Me2TCCP was identified that can be held responsible for the stability of the most stable adducts due to donor‐acceptor interactions., Diverse computational evaluations of >60 supramolecular adducts show that Me2TCCP can act as a Lewis acid by accepting electron density with a hybrid σ*/π* orbital.

MAX phases are layered ternary carbides or nitrides that are attractive for catalysis applications due to their unusual set of properties. They show high thermal stability like ceramics, but they are also tough, ductile, and good conductors of heat and electricity like metals. Here, we study the potential of the Ti3AlC2 MAX phase as a support for molybdenum oxide for the reverse water–gas shift (RWGS) reaction, comparing this new catalyst to more traditional materials. The catalyst showed higher turnover frequency values than MoO3/TiO2 and MoO3/Al2O3 catalysts, due to the outstanding electronic properties of the Ti3AlC2 support. We observed a charge transfer effect from the electronically rich Ti3AlC2 MAX phase to the catalyst surface, which in turn enhances the reducibility of MoO3 species during reaction. The redox properties of the MoO3/Ti3AlC2 catalyst improve its RWGS intrinsic activity compared to TiO2- and Al2O3-based catalysts. Dye-Sensitized Photoelectrochemical Cells are promising devices in solar energy conversion. However, several limitations still have to be addressed, such as the major loss pathway through charge recombination at the dye-semiconductor interface. Charge separating dyes constructed as push-pull systems can increase the spatial separation of electron and hole, decreasing the recombination rate. Here, we in silico investigate a family of dyes, consisting of polyphenylamine donors, fluorene bridges and perylene monoimide acceptors using a combination of semi-empirical nuclear dynamics and a quantum propagation of photoexcited electron and hole. To optimize the charge separation, several molecular design strategies are investigated, including modifying the donor molecule, increasing the π-bridge length and decoupling the molecular components through steric effects. It is found that the combination of a triphenylamine donor, using an extended 2-fluorene π-bridge and decoupling the different components by steric hindrance from side groups results in a dye with significantly improved charge separation properties in comparison to the original supramolecular complex.

Hoogsteen (HG) base pairing is characterized by a 180° rotation of the purine base with respect to the Watson-Crick-Franklin (WCF) motif. Recently, it has been found that both conformations coexist in a dynamical equilibrium and that several biological functions require HG pairs. This relevance has motivated experimental and computational investigations of the base-pairing transition. However, a systematic simulation of sequence variations has remained out of reach. Here, we employ advanced path-based methods to perform unprecedented free-energy calculations. Our methodology enables us to study the different mechanisms of purine rotation, either remaining inside or after flipping outside of the double helix. We study seven different sequences, which are neighbor variations of a well-studied A⋅T pair in A6-DNA. We observe the known effect of A⋅T steps favoring HG stability, and find evidence of triple-hydrogen-bonded neighbors hindering the inside transition. More importantly, we identify a dominant factor: the direction of the A rotation, with the 6-ring pointing either towards the longer or shorter segment of the chain, respectively relating to a lower or higher barrier. This highlights the role of DNA’s relative flexibility as a modulator of the WCF/HG dynamic equilibrium. Additionally, we provide a robust methodology for future HG proclivity studies.

The objective of the present work was to make a quantitative and critical comparison of a number of drift and noise-removal algorithms, which were proven useful by other researchers, but which had never been compared on an equal basis. To make a rigorous and fair comparison, a data generation tool is developed in this work, which utilizes a library of experimental backgrounds, as well as peak shapes obtained from curve fitting on experimental data. Several different distribution functions are used, such as the log-normal, bi-Gaussian, exponentially convoluted Gaussian, exponentially modified Gaussian and modified Pearson VII distributions. The tool was used to create a set of hybrid (part experimental, part simulated) data, in which the background and all peak profiles and areas are known. This large data set (500 chromatograms) was analysed using seven different drift-correction and five different noise-removal algorithms (35 combinations). Root-mean square errors and absolute errors in peak area were determined and it was shown that in most cases the combination of sparsity-assisted signal smoothing and asymmetrically reweighted penalized least-squares resulted in the smallest errors for relatively low-noise signals. However, for noisier signals the combination of sparsity-assisted signal smoothing and a local minimum value approach to background correction resulted in lower absolute errors in peak area. The performance of correction algorithms was studied as a function of the density and coverage of peaks in the chromatogram, shape of the background signal, and noise levels. The developed data-generation tool is published along with this article, so as to allow similar studies with other simulated data sets and possibly other algorithms. The rigorous assessment of correction algorithms in this work may facilitate further automation of data-analysis workflows.

Kinetic analysis of polyesterification reactions using Lewis-acidic metal catalysts have been performed. While Sn-based catalysts are superior to Ti-based catalysts under neat polycondensation conditions (high [H2O]), the result is inverted under azeotropic conditions (low [H2O]). These findings show that the catalytic activity is crucially determined by the robustness of the catalyst against hydrolytic degradation.

The next generation of advanced functional materials can greatly benefit from methods for realizing the right chemical composition at the right place. Nanocomposites of amorphous silica and metal carbonate nanocrystals (BaCO3/SiO2) form an attractive starting point as they can straightforwardly be assembled in different controllable three-dimensional (3D) shapes, while the chemical composition of the nanocrystals can be completely converted via ion exchange. Nevertheless, it is still unknown-let alone predictable-how nanoscopic changes in the lattice volume of the nanocrystals translate to changes in the microscopic dimensions of 3D BaCO3/SiO2 structures during ion exchange. Here, we demonstrate that the microscopic shape adapts to contraction and expansion of the atomic spacing of nanocrystals. Starting from BaCO3/SiO2, we systematically decrease and increase lattice volumes by converting the BaCO3 nanocrystals into a range of chalcogenides and perovskites. Based on geometrical analysis, we obtain a precise prediction for how the microscopic nanocomposite volume follows the change in nanoscopic crystal volume. The silica matrix facilitates mechanical flexibility to adapt to nanoscopic volume changes, while preserving the 3D morphology and fine details of the original composite with high fidelity. The versatility and predictability of shape-preserving conversion reactions open up exciting opportunities for using nanocomposites as functional components.

We investigate the H/D isotope effect in a liquid-liquid transition in crystallization-resistant supercooled aqueous solution. Using steady-state infrared spectroscopy and measuring thermal conductivities, we observe a ≈5 K shift in the onset temperature of the liquid-liquid transition, a value that is similar to the H/D isotope shifts of the HDA-LDA transition and of the Widom line of pure supercooled water [Kim et al., Science 358, 1589 (2017)], and that highlights the importance of isotope effects in water's supercooled regime. By employing multivariate data analysis we find isosbestic point related to the phase transformation in both isotopic systems, indicating phase coexistence during the transition. This article is dedicated to the memory of Austen Angell, and we begin with some personal memories of his two stays at the University of Amsterdam.

The primary objective of this article is to investigate the possibility of inter-relating the characteristics of unary, binary, and ternary mixtures across microporous zeolite membranes. Towards this end, we performed Configurational-Bias Monte Carlo (CBMC) simulations of mixture adsorption equilibrium, and Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations of guest diffusivities in unary (CO2, CH4, N2, and H2), binary (CO2/CH4, CO2/N2, CH4/N2, CO2/H2), and ternary (CO2/CH4/N2, CO2/CH4/H2, CO2/N2/H2) mixtures in four zeolites: CHA, DDR, MFI, and FAU. The combined CBMC and MD data are used to obtain fundamental insights into the adsorption, diffusion, and permeation characteristics of the variety of guest/host combinations. Application of the Myers-Prausnitz theory shows that the adsorption selectivity for the i-j pair, Sads,ij, in ternary mixtures has practically the same value as for the binary i-j mixture, provided the comparison is made as the same surface potential Φ, a convenient and practical proxy for the spreading pressure π, that is calculable on the basis of the data on the unary isotherms of the constituent guests. For the mixtures investigated, departures from thermodynamic idealities do not cause deviations from the uniqueness of the Sads,ij vs Φ dependence because the ratios of the activity coefficients γi/γj also appear to uniquely depend on Φ. The surface potential Φ is also the thermodynamically correct metric to describe the loading dependence of diffusivities. Compared at the same Φ, the diffusion selectivity for the i-j pair, Sdiff,ij, in ternary mixtures has practically the same value as for the binary i-j mixture. Consequently, the permeation selectivity, Sperm,ij=Sads,ij×Sdiff,ij is also uniquely dependent on Φ. When compared at the same Φ, the component permeabilities, Πi for CO2, CH4, and N2 are found to be independent of the partners in the binary and ternary mixtures investigated and have practically the same as the values for the corresponding unary permeabilities.

The capability of an ion trap mass spectrometer to store ions for an arbitrary amount of time allows the use of a single infrared (IR) laser to perform two-color double resonance IR–IR spectroscopic experiments on mass-to-charge (m/z) selected ions. In this single-laser IR2MS3 scheme, one IR laser frequency is used to remove a selected set of isomers from the total trapped ion population and the second IR laser frequency, from the same laser, is used to record the IR spectrum of the remaining precursor ions. This yields isomer-specific vibrational spectra of the m/z-selected ions, which can reveal the structure and identity of the initially co-isolated isomeric species. The use of a single laser greatly reduces the experimental complexity of two-color IR2MS3 and enhances its application in fields employing analytical MS. In this work, we demonstrate the methodology by acquiring single-laser IR2MS3 spectra in a forensic context, identifying two previously unidentified isomeric novel psychoactive substances (NPS) from a sample that was confiscated by the Amsterdam Police.

Two dipyridyl ligands were synthesized, where the pyridyl donor fragments were separated by an isophthalamide (1) or a dipicolinamide moiety (2). Both ligands formed [Pd2(Ligand)4][BF4]4 complexes in CD2Cl2 containing 5% dmso-d6. It was found that while [Pd2(1)4][BF4]4 readily binds to n-octyl glycosides and to nitrate anions, [Pd2(2)4][BF4]4 did not. The difference in binding properties could be rationalized based on the reduced flexibility and size of the [Pd2(2)4]2+ cage and/or stronger interior binding of a BF4− counter anion.

Frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) are well known for their ability to activate small molecules. Recent reports of radical formation within such systems indicate single‐electron transfer (SET) could play an important role in their chemistry. Herein, we investigate radical formation upon reacting FLP systems with dihydrogen, triphenyltin hydride, or tetrachloro‐1,4‐benzoquinone (TCQ) both experimentally and computationally to determine the nature of the single‐electron transfer (SET) events; that is, being direct SET to B(C6F5)3 or not. The reactions of H2 and Ph3SnH with archetypal P/B FLP systems do not proceed via a radical mechanism. In contrast, reaction with TCQ proceeds via SET, which is only feasible by Lewis acid coordination to the substrate. Furthermore, SET from the Lewis base to the Lewis acid–substrate adduct may be prevalent in other reported examples of radical FLP chemistry, which provides important design principles for radical main‐group chemistry., The radical reactivity of archetypal P/B frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) systems is probed through utilization of the light dependency of direct single‐electron transfer from the phosphine to the borane to determine that reactivity with H2 does not proceed via a radical pathway. For radical FLP reactions with carbonyl‐containing substrates, direct SET is excluded in favor of borane coordination to the carbonyl, after which SET occurs.

Homogeneous ruthenium catalysed methanol dehydrogenation could become a key reaction for hydrogen production in liquid fuel cells. In order to improve existing catalytic systems, mechanistic insight is paramount in directing future studies. Herein, we describe what computational mechanistic research has taught us so far about ruthenium catalysed dehydrogenation reactions. In general, two mechanistic pathways can be operative in these reactions: a metal-centered or a metal-ligand cooperative (Noyori-Morris type) minimum energy reaction pathway (MERP). Discerning between these mechanisms on the basis of computational studies has proven to be highly input dependent, and to circumvent pitfalls it is important to consider several factors, such as solvent effects, metal-ligand cooperativity, alternative geometries, and complex electronic structures of metal centres. Herein, we report a nondirected para-selective C−H alkynylation of aniline derivatives by a Pd/S,O-ligand-based catalyst. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions and is compatible with a variety of substituted anilines. The scalability and further derivatizations of the alkynylated products have been also demonstrated.

The application of proteomics to fresh frozen (FF) and formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) human tissues is an important development spurred on by requests from stakeholder groups in clinical fields. One objective is to complement current diagnostic methods with new specific molecular information. An important goal is to achieve adequate and consistent protein recovery across and within large-scale studies. Here, we describe development of several protocols incorporating mass spectrometry compatible detergents, including Rapigest, PPS, and ProteaseMax. Methods were applied on 4 and 15 µm thick FF tissues, and 4 µm thick FFPE tissues. We evaluated sensitivity and repeatability of the methods and found that the protocol containing Rapigest enabled detection of 630 proteins from FF tissue of 1 mm2 and 15 µm thick, whereas 498 and 297 proteins were detected with the protocols containing ProteaseMax and PPS, respectively. Surprisingly, PPS-containing buffer showed good extraction of the proteins from 4 µm thick FFPE tissue with the average of 270 protein identifications (1 mm2), similar to the results on 4 µm thick FF. Moreover, we found that temperature increases during incubation with urea on 4 µm thick FF tissue revealed a decrease in the number of identified proteins and increase in the number of the carbamylated peptides.

To realize the potential of near-infrared (NIR) upconversion nanosensitizers for photodynamic therapy of cancer, upconversion luminescence and energy transfer (ET) efficiency from emitter donors to photosensitizer acceptors need to be improved. In the current work, upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) with a core/emitter-active shell structure were constructed to enhance not only the upconversion emission but also the ET from the nanoparticles to surface-anchored photosensitizers. The emitter was doped into the shell to bridge the migration of upconverted energy to the surface. NaYF4:Yb,Er/NaYF4:Er UCNPs and rose bengal (RB) photosensitizer were employed as an example. The upconversion emission was lifted by up to ∼81 times of the core counterpart. The bridge effect of the emitter-doped shell was obvious for the constructed nanophotosensitizer. The emission of the RB photosensitizer was up to ∼36 times that of the core counterpart. The NaYF4:Yb,Er/NaYF4:Er UCNPs also endow the RB photosensitizers with the most efficient reactive oxygen species production capability under NIR irradiation. In vitro photodynamic tests on glioma cells were conducted to validate the efficacy of the NaYF4:Yb,Er/NaYF4:Er/RB agent. Therefore, this work can facilitate the development of ET-based upconversion nanosystems.

Di-iron hydrogenases are a class of enzymes that are capable of reducing protons to form molecular hydrogen with high efficiency. In addition to the catalytic site, these enzymes have evolved dedicated pathways to transport protons and electrons to the reaction center. Here, we present a detailed study of the most likely proton transfer pathway in such an enzyme using QM/MM molecular dynamics simulations. The protons are transported through a channel lined out from the protein exterior to the di-iron active site, by a series of hydrogen-bonded, weakly acidic or basic, amino acids and two incorporated water molecules. The channel shows remarkable flexibility, which is an essential feature to quickly reset the hydrogen-bond direction in the channel after each proton passing. Proton transport takes place via a “hole” mechanism, rather than an excess proton mechanism, the free energy landscape of which is remarkably flat, with a highest transition state barrier of only 5 kcal/mol. These results confirm our previous assumptions that proton transport is not rate limiting in the H2 formation activity and that cysteine C299 may be considered protonated at physiological pH conditions. Detailed understanding of this proton transport may aid in the ongoing attempts to design artificial biomimetic hydrogenases for hydrogen fuel production.

Porphyrin molecules are versatile building blocks that have been used for many different applications. They have been used as catalysts, their properties being very dependent on the metal that is in the core of the porphyrin. They have been also applied as a chromophore, and the light absorbing properties mainly depend on the aromatic ring. Lastly, they have been intensively used as molecular building blocks to construct supramolecular assemblies. For this purpose, mostly zinc(ii) porphyrin building blocks have been used, as their coordination chemistry is predictable, the binding of pyridyl type ligands is reversible and rapid yet of sufficient strength to allow assembly formation under a wide variety of conditions. In principle porphyrin building blocks can also be applied in photocatalysis, using self-assembled structures, thereby using a combination of all the key properties of the porphyrin building block. In this chapter we discuss the application of porphyrin building blocks in this area. We will start with a few examples in the application of self-assembled structures in catalysis, then we provide examples of the use of porphyrin building blocks in photophysics and conclude with the description of the application of self-assembled structures for photocatalysis.

The conformational dependence of the matrix element for spin–orbit coupling and of the electronic coupling for charge separation are determined for an electron donor–acceptor system containing a pyrene acceptor and a dimethylaniline donor. Different kinetic and energetic aspects that play a role in the spin–orbit charge transfer intersystem crossing (SOCT-ISC) mechanism are discussed. This includes parameters related to initial charge separation and the charge recombination pathways using the Classical Marcus Theory of electron transfer. The spin–orbit coupling, which plays a significant role in charge recombination to the triplet state, can be probed by (TD)-DFT, using the latter as a tool to understand and predict the SOCT-ISC mechanism. The matrix elements for spin–orbit coupling for acetone and 4-thio-thymine are used for benchmarking. (Time Dependent-) Density Functional Theory (DFT and TD-DFT) calculations are applied using the quantum chemical program Amsterdam Density Functional (ADF).

Advance of nanomaterials and nanotechnology has offered new possibilities for photodynamic therapy (PDT). Large amount of different kinds of sensitizers and targeting moieties can now be loaded in nanometer’s volume, which not only results in the improvement of the efficacy of PDT, but also enables the control of image-guided PDT with unprecedented precision and variation. This chapter shall overview the recently most studied inorganic nanomaterials for PDT.

In this article, the visual implication of secondary degradation products in a degraded yellow rose in a still life painting by A. Mignon is discussed as a case study. A multimodal combination of chemical and optical imaging techniques, including noninvasive macroscopic x-ray powder diffraction (MA-XRPD) and macroscopic x-ray fluorescence imaging, allowed us to gain a 3D understanding of the transformation of the original intended appearance of the rose into its current degraded state. MA-XRPD enabled us to precisely correlate in situ formed products with what is optically visible on the surface and demonstrated that the precipitated lead arsenates and arsenolite from the yellow pigment orpiment and the light-induced fading of an organic yellow lake irreversibly changed the artist’s intentional light-shadow modeling., Published by Assoc., Washington, DC [u.a.]
